World’s Most Powerful Handheld Laser (or…could just be hyperbole)

Wicked Lasers is touting they’re newest laser, the S3 Krypton Series, as the most powerful handheld laser you can legally own. They advise that it’s over 8,000 times brighter than the sun and say it’s under review by the Guinness Book of World Records. “Safety goggles are a must.” They even provide them and a “tactical” holster! Of course, in the video they seem to confuse the range at which the beam is no longer visible to the human eye vs. how long it actually extends, but that’s really a minor quibble. If it’s visible from outer space, as they claim, that’s pretty damn visible.

It’d be a lot cooler if they didn’t also say the S3 Arctic (blue laser) wasn’t the most powerful handheld laser you could own (though by their information it is slightly less powerful than the Krypton)…or if they didn’t also say their flashlight was the most powerful one you could own and that it was also being tested by Guinness. (To be fair, it might all be true, but the way they have it on their comes off as a little too sensationalistic.) It also has something called TeslaCool Thermostatic Regulation. Now, we have no idea what the hell that means, but it sounds cool and we want one. Despite the manufacturer’s statement that the laser is too powerful to be used as a weapon sight (the logic of which we’d be interested to hear), you know it’d be fun to throw on the side of a rifle. I personally know guys who would spend hours on the range trying to figure out if they could burn holes in paper targets instead of ever actually pulling the trigger.  Sensational hyperbole or not, and despite the fact that we have no real need for it, this might actually be fun to own, if for no other reason than to pop balloons at some poor bastard’s birthday party.

I think that the reason why they say that it’s too powerful for a weapon’s sight is that it either can be seen from too far away or, most likely, you’d be at too great a risk of permanently blinding your target if you aim your weapon a little too high. On the bright side, it would probably make for a great training tool for the range, with the laser being as powerful as it is you’ll probably (at the very least) leave nice burn marks on your target which can show you where you were aiming vs. the actual point of impact.
