If you’ve been hungry for a wackier take on the looter shooter than The Division or Destiny, then you’re in luck, because Borderlands 3 has been officially revealed. New characters, new environs, new enemies, and over a billion (procedurally-generated) guns, including at least one with legs. There’s no release date as of yet, but the Official Website for the game is noted to have more info starting April 3rd.

Saturday, March 23rd, 2019Gerber has released an updated model of their Center-Drive multitool, the Center-Drive Plus. The original Center-Drive was designed to allow one-handed access to the three major components of the tool: the pliers, bit driver, and blade. With the Center-Drive Plus, Gerber added spring-loaded scissors, and changed the original full edge blade to a partially-serrated blade. The components on the plus are now also tumble-finished, and the blade comes with a leather sheath, instead of the nylon sheath of the previous model.

Clearly, the series is becoming steadily more outlandish with every installment, but of course it’s still worth watching, because you definitely want to see how John fights off the combined efforts of a city full of assassins and a shadowy criminal organization.

Doom: Annihilation Trailer
Wednesday, March 13th, 2019There was a film based on the popular video game franchise ‘Doom’ that was released in 2005; it starred Karl Urban and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, featured monsters which were the result of genetic experimentation rather than demons from Hell, and aside from a pretty cool first person sequence, was largely forgettable, and didn’t really do its namesake justice.
Somehow, this more recent attempt to bring Doom to the big small screen looks even worse – as you can probably guess by the quality of the footage, the effects, and the acting, it’s a straight-to-home-release production. Plus, there’s not even a Doomguy / Doom Slayer, just a bunch of generic space marines; y’know, the guys that got slaughtered by the forces of Hell before Doomguy tore through them with superhuman ability, and enough firepower to start a small war.
Tellingly, the official DOOM twitter account even released a tweet stating: “We’re not involved with the movie.” Whether you take the statement as a passive-aggressive dig against the quality of the trailer, or a pure statement of fact with no double meaning, it’s clear after the excellent DOOM 2016 and what’s been shown of DOOM: Eternal, that no one on those teams had any input in this film’s production.
No definite release date has been announced, but expect Doom: Annihilation to hit various video on demand services later this year.
RAGE 2 – Wasteland Superhero Trailer

Make It Extreme – DIY Electric Rotary Gun
Tuesday, February 26th, 2019YouTube channel Make It Extreme planned out and built a ‘DIY Electric Rotary Gun’. A more detailed description of the build can be read here, but essentially they developed a motor-powered gun that feeds round projectiles from a hopper into an aluminum spiral-walled ‘barrel’ (a piece repurposed from an air compressor). The makeshift ‘barrel’ rotates at approximately 3000rpm, in which the rounds launch around the walls of the barrel until shooting out the opening, with a surprising amount of force. As the video clearly demonstrates, this isn’t a particularly accurate gun, but this inaccuracy is offset by the massive volume of projectiles, 8mm plastic shots for the purpose of the video; although the creators state their gun is capable of shooting both plastic and metal shots sized from 6mm to 9mm.
The video shows the non-descript build process for the gun, but if you want to make one for yourself, you can join the $10 tier of their Patreon, and you’ll have access to the plans. Also, to be fair, a common interpretation of DIY is you can do it yourself with fairly common tools and implements; the equipment in this video, such as the lathe and press, are fairly specialized components, so how DIY this project truly is can be pretty subjective.
It’s still pretty darn cool, though.

Ahoy – MP40
Friday, February 15th, 2019Ahoy is back once again with another video, this time detailing the iconic German MP40 and its inclusion in video games and films. The video starts with a brief overview of the adoption of submachine guns in 20th century warfare leading up to the development of the MP40, and also briefly recognizes some of the contemporaries of its era, including the American Thompson and Soviet PPSH-41. It’s by no means an in-depth history, but it’s still an entertaining video that shows the pedigree of the titular submachine gun, and its influence on culture and entertainment.

ioscribe – 3D printed Banana Standard Pistol

The frame, called the Banana Standard, was printed out of PLA at 0.1mm layer heights, and is fully functional, except for an issue with the slide and recoil spring being too heavy to function when used in conjunction with a suppressor.

MetaBallStudios – Star Wars Size Comparison
Monday, February 4th, 2019YouTube channel MetaBallStudios produced this video, which compares the sizes of various objects and beings within the Star Wars universe, from the lowliest lightsaber, to the grandiose Starkiller Base AKA the creatively bankrupt super-ultra-mega Death Star, and even planetary bodies beyond, up to Yavin Prime. Truthfully, the scale of ships and planets within Star Wars wasn’t ever really a personal interest, but it’s definitely interesting to see how vast some of the vehicles get, especially when they start dwarfing modern day cities in scope.

Snake Plissken’s First Escape – Unreleased Demo Footage
Friday, February 1st, 2019This is footage from a build of a proposed Snake Plissken game, which would have taken place before the events of ‘Escape from New York’. The storyline was fully-approved by Kurt Russell, Debra Hill, and John Carpenter, and would have featured voice work by Russell and music composed by Carpenter. However, the project eventually fell through and all that’s really left of the game are some demo reels like this, and concept art.
If you’re wondering about the somewhat over-the-top game mechanics in the footage, the game itself was being developed by the same team that worked on the game Dead to Rights. If you’re not familiar with that title, it’s a John Woo-inspired action game in which you play as a cop who fights criminals while dual wielding guns, also using bullet time shoot dodges and martial arts takedowns – all elements that are featured in this footage. Bullet time or not, it would have been cool to play a Snake game, and it’s a shame this one never saw release.

It stars Mads Mikkelsen as a highly-skilled and respected/feared assassin who has retired but finds himself back in action and at odds with his old employer and various other assassins now gunning for him…
Look, I know what you’re thinking, but no, it’s not a John Wick copycat. I mean, sure, there’s a third Wick film due out this May, so the timing of the release is certainty (at least partially) deliberate. All the same, from what I know of the original comic, the source material stands on its own, and from the trailer the film looks a bit more overtly cartoonish as opposed to John Wick, which is still somewhat cartoonish, but in a more subdued manner.

Negan From The Walking Dead In Tekken 7
Sunday, December 2nd, 2018So this one’s a little weird, but as part of the latest batch of downloadable characters for the fighting game Tekken 7, they’ve put Negan from The Walking Dead tv series in as a character, and he’s actually being voiced by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Thanks to the power of cross-promotion, you have a guy with a barbed wire-wrapped bat, fighting against oftentimes supernatural martial artists. And his guest stage is the trailer scene from the season six finale.
Black Mesa: Xen Trailer
Wednesday, November 28th, 2018Black Mesa is a remake of the 1998 video game Half-Life, developed by a team of fans known as Crowbar Collective. Black Mesa is notable as not only is it a solid remake of what is considered one of the greatest video games of all time, but the project is actually sanctioned by original Half-Life developer Valve Corporation, so much that it was approved for sale on Valve’s digital distribution platform, Steam.
Despite an initial release in 2012, however, Black Mesa is still technically in development. The last portion of the game, the Xen borderworld, has been announced and pushed back a few times, since what was originally a December 2017 release date. But, with this new trailer, Crowbar Collective not only teases their own interpretation and expansion of Xen for Black Mesa, but also promises a second quarter 2019 release.
While that’s still some months away, it’s great to see something new(ish) related to Half-Life have a tangible release date.
Once Upon A Deadpool Trailer
Monday, November 19th, 2018So, this is a strange one: it’s Deadpool 2, but reedited to achieve a PG-13 rating, and it has a framing device where Deadpool is telling the events of the film to a kidnapped Fred Savage, who is essentially playing the same role he did as the kid in ‘The Princess Bride’. As far as the meta humor goes, it’s pretty Deadpool appropriate. Plus, Ryan Reynolds only agreed to do the movie if some of the proceeds when to a charitable organization.
Once Upon A Deadpool will be a limited release in theaters starting December 12.

Wednesday, November 14th, 2018Void Bastards is an upcoming “strategy shooter” developed by former Irrational Games and Looking Glass Studios employees, the devs behind BioShock and System Shock 2. The game has you leading a team of prisoners as they travel the Sargasso Nebula, exploring ships, navigating through space, and gathering supplies to survive. It features a cartoonish, indie comic-like visual style, complemented by a wacky, humorous tone.
Void Bastards is slated for a 2019 release.
