The Hacksmith – Predator Thermal Vision Helmet

Sunday, June 21st, 2020

YouTube Channel The Hacksmith created a thermal vision helmet inspired by the ones worn by the Predators/Yautja from the series of the same name. They accomplished this by utilizing several off-the-shelf camera and computer components, including a FLIR Lepton 3.5 thermal censor pulled from a FLIR ONE Pro thermal imaging camera, and mating them to a Zeiss Cinemizer headset, all mounted within a Predator-themed motorcycle helmet cover. However, they didn’t stop there, as they also utilized a Wicked Lasers LaserCube with a custom 3D-printed shoulder mount to replicate the Predator’s laser cannon. The end result is a working helmet that can switch between various vision modes, and a shoulder-mounted laser that projects a triangular reticle, and can pop balloons almost instantly; in short, it’s pretty damn cool.

First Colorado Agency Implements Viridian Gun Cameras

Tuesday, May 12th, 2020

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – May 11, 2020 – The Kit Carson County Sheriff’s Office has deployed the FACT Duty™ Weapon-Mounted Camera (WMC™). Sheriff Tom Ridnour has been working to equip his force for modern policing over the last year. Every sworn deputy of the Eastern Colorado county now has a Weapon-Mounted Camera in the field to compliment body cameras.

The rural force is responsible for patrolling over 2,000 square miles that includes the border with Kansas. Sheriff Ridnour has been working to implement Viridian gun cameras, and was able to get them deployed on March 1 of this year. That timing coincided with the first time footage from Viridian’s gun camera was used in an officer-involved shooting (OIS) trial in Texas. A jury quickly convicted the defendant of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a public official. The WMC provided the critical evidence in the case by showing the defendant pointing a sawed-off shotgun at Vernon, Texas Police Corporal T.J. Session.

“The Weapon-Mounted Cameras provide a new layer of visibility and perspective for our deputies,” said Sheriff Ridnour. “As a rural force, we cover a huge area with a limited number of personnel. The range of responsibilities our deputies have is equally as great—and knowing we now have the FACT Duty gun cameras in the field gives us even more coverage and awareness.”

Viridian has created an important category for law enforcement with the introduction of the Weapon-Mounted Camera. This distinctive camera provides an unobstructed view of critical use-of-force events from the end of the firearm, addressing limitations officers can face with body cameras.

“Sheriff Ridnour has been dedicated to bringing the latest technologies to his department, and we’re thrilled he added the FACT Duty,” Viridian President and CEO, Brian Hedeen, said.  “Our technology can be a supplement or alternative to body cameras as a mandatory evidentiary tool to provide the critical evidence in an officer involved shooting. We commend Sheriff Ridnour for being the first to deploy in Colorado and wish him and his deputies the best during these unprecedented and challenging times for all first responders.”

The highly advanced WMC employs a 1080p full-HD digital camera with a microphone and 500 lumen tactical light. Viridian’s proprietary INSTANT-ON® technology automatically activates the camera and microphone whenever the officer draws the firearm from its holster. Not only does this eliminate risk of failure to manually turn on the camera during a critical event, but it also keeps the officer from fumbling with cumbersome equipment.

More information on the FACT Duty can be found here or by contacting Viridian directly at sales@ViridianWeaponTech.com.

Viridian announces free webinar for law enforcement: over 500 PDs using weapon-mounted cameras

Monday, June 17th, 2019

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – June 17, 2019 – Viridian Weapon Technologies has announced an upcoming webinar for law enforcement discussing why over 500 police departments across the country have started the process of implementing the FACT Duty™ Weapon-Mounted Camera (WMC™). The webinar is free and will be hosted on Thursday, June 20 at 10:00 a.m. CDT. Those interested in taking part in the conversation and learning more about the WMC can sign up for the webinar here.

“This webinar is a unique opportunity to learn more about the WMC and find out why over 500 departments are putting the device to use in the field,” said Viridian President and CEO Brian Hedeen. “The FACT Duty WMC provides an unobstructed view of what really happened during gun-drawn incidents, and it begins recording automatically when the firearm is drawn from the holster. These features alone offer a straightforward, vital supplement or alternative to current body camera programs.”

The expert staff at Viridian will discuss the video evidence system that is quickly becoming part of the solution to mitigating one of the biggest issues facing law enforcement today. The FACT Duty provides an unobstructed view from the end of the firearm, showing what really happened during firearm-involved use-of-force incidents. With INSTANT-ON® activation upon draw, it offers an easy-to-implement strategy for capturing high-risk and significant liability exposure situations.

Virtual attendees will hear from Viridian National Sales Manager, Kevin Skalicky, and Viridian General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer, Matthew Plowman. The two hosts will discuss findings from the field, provide updates on the over 500 departments in the process of testing and implementing WMCs across the country and be available to answer any questions.

Free registration is open now. More information on the FACT Duty, Viridian and the entire lineup at ViridianWeaponTech.com.

CATASAUQUA Police Department Implements Viridian Weapon-Mounted Camera

Monday, October 1st, 2018

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – October 1, 2018 – Viridian Weapon Technologies announces that the Catasauqua Police Department, located just outside of Allentown, Pennsylvania, has deployed the FACT Duty™ Weapon-Mounted Camera (WMC™). Viridian and Catasauqua will hold a joint press conference to discuss this milestone on Tuesday, October 2 at 10:00 a.m. at the Borough of Catasauqua Municipal Complex, 90 Bridge Street, Catasauqua, Pennsylvania 18032.

The FACT Duty fits officer weapons and holsters and records automatically, providing an unobstructed view from the end of an officer’s firearm. The need for this product continues to be validated in current events throughout the United States.

“The transparency and ease of implementation helped us choose this solution,” said Catasauqua Chief of Police Douglas Kish. “A department of our size has a surprisingly large number of interactions with the public. The FACT Duty WMC allows us the coverage for a possible (and rare) Officer Involved Shooting without huge overhead costs or recurring payment requirements.”

Viridian has created an important new category for law enforcement with the introduction of the FACT camera. This unique Weapon-Mounted Camera provides an unobstructed view of critical use-of-force events from the end of the firearm, addressing limitations officers can face with body cameras.

“Catasauqua becomes the first department in Pennsylvania to implement our FACT Duty Weapon-Mounted Camera,” said Viridian President and CEO Brian Hedeen. “Current events point to the fact that body and dash cameras alone are inadequate. More than 300 police departments around the country are in the process of testing and implementing FACT Duty WMCs. We’re seeing more and more departments choose our products and I think that is because our WMCs provide an unfettered perspective for officer-involved shootings and other use-of-force incidents, and our products help show what really happened.”

Easy Implementation
FACT WMCs do not require the purchase of supplemental equipment or services and are designed exclusively to answer the needs of today’s officers. The WMC generates just a small fraction of the data to manage compared to other law enforcement recording options because it only records when the officer’s weapon is drawn. This results in significantly lower comparative data management costs. The WMCs fit on existing standard-issue firearms and fit seamlessly in multiple duty holster platforms. The cameras feature a recording time of over three hours to handle virtually any scenario. They also incorporate secured data access and are easily rechargeable.

Body and dash cameras were not designed to capture officer-involved shootings. However, Viridian WMCs were designed specifically for this purpose.

Category Creation and Importance Today
The need for this technology was recognized several years ago. While the product was in development, events continued to unfold that only increased the urgency for Weapon-Mounted Cameras for police officers across America. Pennsylvania has been in the spotlight for these events. From the David Jones shooting in Philadelphia in 2016 to the Antwon Rose II shooting in Pittsburgh this past summer, these tragic events illustrate outrage that occurs partially from a lack of information to determine what happened. These events are the source of massive protests and community disruption.

“As we closely monitor these events around the country along with the aftermath when affected parties do not believe justice was served, we realize that our solution cannot be implemented soon enough by more departments,” said Matthew Plowman, General Counsel at Viridian. “Much of the controversy in so many past incidents and trials was what the officer saw when pulling the trigger. The FACT Duty is a tool to provide objective evidence, both for potential legal proceedings and in helping the community understand what happened. Our WMC also aids police communication to the general public to help eliminate the uncertainty in officer-involved shootings that is the source of much conflict.”

“With HERO4 Session, we challenged ourselves to produce the smallest, lightest, most convenient GoPro possible,” said Nicholas Woodman, GoPro founder and CEO. “HERO4 Session combines the best of our engineering and user-experience know-how to deliver our most convenient life-capture solution, yet.” Woodman adds, “I’m so excited about the launch of HERO4 Session because now I can finally use mine in public!”

HERO4 Session is built to GoPro’s famous rugged standards and is waterproof to 33 feet (10 meters). “At GoPro, sound quality is as important as image quality and we’re very excited about the stunning audio advancements we’ve made with HERO4 Session during water-based and windy activities. It’s incredible what this little GoPro can capture,” remarked Woodman.
