Kettlebells are arguably one of the most simple-and-effective exercise tools avaiable today. The foundation of working with kettlebells, the kettlebell swing, is a great exercise that builds lower body and core strength while improving cardiovascular fitness. Just remember to use proper form when doing this exercise, since it’s not uncommon to see even workout veterans doing their swings wrong.
The swing is a superb exercise and kettlebells allow you to develop strength, cardio and power with just one tool. Once you’ve mastered the swing be sure to move onto the snatch. Recently read too of the Turkish get-up being taught to some special forces units- to allow them to move from being on the ground to standing without having to twist to the side so that their SAPI plates are always facing the enemy. Kettlebells, IMHO, seem ideally suited to military fitness- whole body strength conditioning, endurance and the ability to engage in short, very intense efforts.
It’s funny you should mention the Turkish get-up: it’s next week’s exercise 🙂
