Prometheus…slowly

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

“In the late 21st century, a star map is discovered within the imagery of Aztec, Mesopotamian and Magdalenian cultures. The crew of the spaceship Prometheus is sent on a scientific expedition to follow the map as part of a mission to find the origins of mankind. Exploring the advanced civilization of an extraterrestrial race, they soon face a threat to humanity’s very existence.”

More importantly, someone is stepping up to not only save the Alien movies, but to redeem science fiction as a whole.

Anyway, some folks really like the Prometheus trailer…so they stretched it out.

Glow in the dark musket wounds…

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

Nowadays everyone knows about Photorhabdus luminescens, stupid. Duh. You know, the glowing bacteria produced by nematodes? The one that kills other nematodes? Anyway, apparently it was all over the place after the Battle of Shiloh (20,000 casualties, most of them KIA) where the soldiers were reported to have “quickly healing, eerily glowing wounds”.

“It took two days and nights for the medics to reach all of the wounded soldiers in Shiloh, and some of the soldiers noticed that their wounds glowed in the darkness. Because the glowing wounds healed more quickly and cleanly, the mysterious force was termed “Angel’s Glow.”

Read more about the glow-in-the-dark casualties.

Big News for Folders and Butterfly Knives: DDR’s New Pivot System

Saturday, April 7th, 2012

A little knife update from Swingin’ Dick and Slim.

We spent some time recently with the Auguste Rodin of knife building up in his double secret super foundry forge headquarters near Cincinnati and got to talk to The Man himself, Mr. Darrel Ralph of Darrel Ralph Designs. As you might expect, he’s got a lot of awesome in the works.

One of these is new developments is the NLT (No Lock Tite) Pivot System they recently developed to further improve the reliability and smooth function of DDR knives. The NLT is a pivot adjustment system that will stay tight and adjusted. They stopped using lock-tite because it breaks loose after several hours of swinging (which is obviously problematic, if you’re using a knife with an integral swing function).

Here are the instructions for the NLT Pivot system. More to follow.

Darrel and his staff have also recently finished the initial tests of their new Maxx Glide Pivot Bushing System, a bushing system intended to accompany their bearing system.

“This bushing system and the NLT are easy to adjust,” Darrel said, “and has virtually no blade play. Plus our clutch mechanism will allow blade tension to be adjusted to your liking, you know if you prefer a little tension on the blade.”

We’re returning in a month or two, though we haven’t decided if we’re going back to the Darrel Ralph shop or if we’re just gonna take some single dancing moms to King’s Island.

TBOC: Big things coming

Friday, April 6th, 2012

There’s a contest coming soon at Rogue American Appareland rumor has it they will be opening TBOC up to suitably proficient and intelligent women (read: they need to enjoy weaponry of some kind and dig bearded gunmen). Keep your eyes peeled for further developments.

Edit: it appears I am as gullible as the next idiot. That was an April Fool’s Joke.

Even so, the patch is bitchin’ and there WILL be some sort of tactical beard contest. Unless I’m even more thick-witted than I thought.

Ghost Recon Future Soldier 7.1 Surround Headset

Thursday, April 5th, 2012

Tritton has a new set of headsets out for those of you who’re jonesing for Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. It uses Dolby Surround 7.1 technology to create the “immersive feeling of high-end home theater setups.” I don’t know if the “3D sound field” will give you a competitive edge, but it will certainly improve the sense that you’ve been transported into the war zone. Find more information on this and other Ghost Recon related gear at Madcatz.

CamoVision goes Kloak

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

JerryJack Outdoors has licensed Kloak Konsealment pattern camo for its “CamoVision” eyewear.

“With CamoVision adopting our KLOAK line of cryptic camouflage in its state-of-the-art eyewear, hunters can get closer than ever to total concealment when in the field,” said Steve Regan, President and CEO of Genesis Pattern Technologies. “Once again, the fact that CamoVision chose KLOAK for its unique technology is very exciting to Genesis.” (Kloak cammie patterns are based on mimicry patterning and ‘cryptic’ colorations found in the natural world. (Some of you may remember Kloak from SHOT.)

CamoVision uses a bonding pattern to add a camouflage pattern to the lenses. This makes you look cool and has the additional benefit (if looking cool isn’t enough for you) of masking your eye movement from whatever you’re hunting.

Not zombies, it should be noted. Zombies don’t respond to typical predator-prey dynamics, and won’t care about your eyes.  Or hippies. They will be too stoned to care.

Lenses are impact resistant polycarbonate UV on nylon frames. They plan on having multiple patterns on styles for for men, women and children.

For more information, check out CamoVision; for more about Kloak, check their website.

Wild Space!

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

This is so unrealistic. Everyone knows Mind Flayers hate Githyanki. Or Githzerai. Or something. I’m still too shaken by the epic awesomeness of this to say something witty.

Would it be too much to ask for them to have added in a half dozen half-nekkid Drow wenches?

Please God, let someone go ahead and make something like this full length.

MKT’s Praetorian

Soldier Systems Daily just posted about Medford Knife and Tool’s new USMC EOD knife. I thought you might be interested in his Praetorian. (Find MKT’s website or go like them on Facebook.)

For myself, I’m looking forward to his video series on window breakin’, but hey, I like watching Greg break stuff.

The Sharp Dressed Shooter

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

Reprinted here courtesy of the Gear Locker. Go check them out if you haven’t already.

You may of heard of ZZ Top’s song, “Sharp Dressed Man”.  When a box arrived from Tactical Distributors, that was the song that popped into my head.  Inside the box, we had enough goodies to outfit a shooter for the field, the range, a game, or day of training.  We received a pair of Vertx pants, TD’s very own Shooter’s Shirt, and Multicam Under Armor Heat Gear Shirt, and the Black Palm Syndicate FlexFit hat in Multicam.

To start the review, we are going to look at Tactical Distributor’s Shooter Shirt with Velcro.  When I say this shirt is soft, it is an under statement. TD went with 100% Pima Cotton and it feels great when the weather gets warm.  A nice side benefit is they put a 4 inch x 3 inch section of Velcro for your favorite morale , ID, or name patch.  Another nice feature is no tag in the back of the neck. It is printed into the shirt.  And the seams are taped, so you don’t feel them as go through out your day.

When you head the range or the field, and want to stand out a bit, wear one of these and people will take a second look.  They currently come in Black Heather, Coyote Tan, and Olive Brown in sizes Small to XXL.

We don’t need to stinkin tags

Next out of the box were a pair of Vertx Pants .  I have been a HUGE fan of Vertx pants for a while now. They are in my top 5  of pants. One of the reasons that I like them so much is they do not look “Tactical”. If you had a scale from 1 to 10. I would say these are 3 or a 4, where a pair of 5.11 or LA Police Gear tactical pants would be a 8 or a 9.  I have actually worn these on Fridays in my office and no one made a note of them.  So, that is a great side benefit for those readers that need to use them to work in, and blend into the crowd.

The pants are very comfortable to wear, and that is in part to the materials used.  Vertx uses “Advantage Stretch”, which is 98% cotton and 2% lycra.  Couple that with articulated hip, and knees, gusset crotch, and a comfort waistband, and you can live in these pants for hours at a time.  Running, bounding, crouching is very comfortible in these pants. They fit well of 6 inch and 8 inch tall boots.

The other features that I like about them are the pockets. They are not baggy, and until you put items into them, stay flat against the sides of your legs. That is a nice touch, as it keeps the “tactical” look toned down a bit.  And for the back pockets, each one has a flap to help keep your wallet, ID, or documents in the pocket and not slip out if you are in a vehicle.

Vertx Tactical pants come in Tan, Kahki, and Olive Drab.  And sizes from 30×30 to 40×36

The RH Pocket has a inner pocket with a zipper. Great for small items.

Next out of the box, we have the Multicam Shirt from Under Armor.  It is made from their Heat Gear material and ArmourBlock Anti-odor technology.  The shirt is going to be a great addition to the summer kit.  This shirt will keep you cool on the field or the range.

Notice the UA logo on the shirt is muted

And finally, Tactical Distributor put into the box  the Black Palm Syndicate FelxFit hat in Multicam.  The hat is a “one size fits most” with the Flexfit soft-shell material.  It is designed to be worn all day, and you can sport your favorite moral patch on the front.  On the side, is the BPS logo.  It is a great item to top off that “Tacticool” Look.  The hat comes in two sizes, Small/Medium and Large/XL.

FlexFit allows the hat to adjust to your head

I highly recommend you head over to Tactical Distribtor’s website. They have a ton of items of dozens of manufacturers and their shipping is by the far the fastest in the industry. And, don’t forget, they have some of the best customer service in the industry.

Osprey Publishing’s awesome new Monopoly set

Sunday, April 1st, 2012

This is the Osprey Monopoly you have heard about complete with description. (Now if they’d just do a version of Risk or Stratego.)

For nearly the last two years, we’ve kept the development of Osprey Monopoly a closely guarded secret, but we just can’t contain the excitement any longer!

Coming later this year, we’ll be releasing a limited-edition run of 1,000 sets. Along with the our exclusive Osprey board, featuring some of our greatest books, you also get our special decks of ‘Chance’ and ‘Ammo Chest’ cards, plastic bunker and fortress pieces to fortify your properties, and a set of our metal game tokens (there’s no hat, but there is a Humvee!).

While the game mostly follows the traditional Monopoly rules of moving around the board, buying properties and building on them, we have included a few special rules that make for a slightly more ‘explosive’ game. But I don’t want to give too much away.

Keep your eye on the blog for a chance to pre-order this limited-edition set, and be the envy of all your friends.
