Jasco Games is bringing an Evil Dead 2 board game to Kickstarter

Friday, August 16th, 2019

Las Vegas-based Jasco Games, designer and publisher of various types of tabletop and card games, has announced that they’re soon going to be putting an Evil Dead 2 board game up on the crowdfunding platform, Kickstarter.

Here’s a bit of background that lead to this announcement: there was an earlier attempt by Bellingham, Washington-based Space Goat Productions to fund an Evil Dead 2 boardgame via Kickstarter. Unfortunately, despite funding from 6000+ backers, Space Goat revealed they would be unable to complete the game and had no concrete solution for the issue. Normally, that would be the end of it, the game would have fallen into obscurity, and all the backers of the original project would go empty-handed.

However, Jasco Games, in partnership with board game designers Lynnvander Studios, have obtained the board game rights for Evil Dead 2, and will be creating their own Evil Dead 2 board game. This new Evil Dead 2 board game, which is also going up on Kickstarter, will have some of the elements from the Space Goat game integrated into its design, and Jasco Games will also be donating a copy of this new game to a backer of the Space Goat version, for every copy funded in the new campaign.

It’s easy to recognize the irony in crowdfunding the revival of a game that failed to be created after its own crowdfunding campaign fell through. However, Jasco Games has a lot of great games based on famous properties under their umbrella, so they’re probably the best bet to actually seeing this project through.

Here’s a link to the official announcement: jascogames.com/jasco-games-looks-to-revive-evil-dead-2-the-official-board-game

Stay tuned for more info on the Kickstarter campaign when it goes live.

Adam Savage’s Zorg Industries ZF-2

Thursday, July 25th, 2019

Adam Savage of Mythbuster’s fame is no stranger to the Zorg Industries ZF-1 from ‘The Fifth Element’, having made a couple of inert replicas for himself. However, his interest in the ZF-1 has extended to producing a functioning model of the highly-versatile sci-fi weapon, dubbed the ZF-2. For the purposes of function, the ZF-2 is roughly twice the size of the ZF-1, and weighs in at 40 lbs. It also isn’t a firearm for the purposes of practicality, instead using a stabilizing camera attached to a NERF dart launcher to replace the “gun” component, however it does have all the other features of the ZF-1 seen in the movie:

– Arrow Launcher
– Net Launcher
– Flame Thrower
– Cryo Launcher
– Rocket Launcher

In short, Adam Savage’s ZF-2 is huge, impractical, and pretty damn cool.

Hollywood Collectibles – Aliens M314 Motion Tracker Prop Replica

Monday, July 22nd, 2019

This is the Aliens M314 Motion Tracker Prop Replica by Hollywood Collectibles: for people who love reproduction props, the movie ‘Aliens’, and have more money than sense. Coming in at $699.99, this isn’t for the casual collector, but to be fair, it’s extremely high-quality, and Hollywood Collectibles went through extensive effort to make it as movie-accurate as possible. To start, they tracked down all the original components that Prop Master Terry Reed used to make the original prop, just to create the master prototype that the production piece is based on. The piece itself is made of injection molded polymer, metal, and other mixed media, and also features movie-accurate working electronics and sound. Sure, it doesn’t actually track anything, but it plays a video sequence of the Xenomorphs popping up on the tracker, and the beeps becoming more rapid as they swarm in ever closer.

The M314 Motion Tracker prop replica is limited to 1000 units worldwide. If you’re interested in this, you should also check out the prop replica ‘Brown Bess’ 1/1 scale M41A Pulse Rifle, and the M240 Incinerator Replica.

Fanboy Movie Friday – The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai

Friday, July 12th, 2019

Officially available on YouTube as an ad-supported release is The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, a pretty crazy Sci-Fi film produced and directed by W. D. Richter, who also co-wrote (really, almost completely re-wrote from scratch) ‘Big Trouble in Little China’, so if you like that film (like me), you might just like this one as well.

Mad Max vs. Dick Dastardly

Saturday, July 6th, 2019

Here’s a fantastic mashup of Mad Max: Fury Road and Dick Dastardly from Wacky Races created by YouTube channel Runaway Pictures Inc. The old Wacky Races music and sound effects overlaid on the Fury Road footage is what really makes the video.

Rambo: Last Blood – Teaser Trailer

Saturday, June 1st, 2019

In this latest (and last?) movie in the Rambo series, Rambo undertakes a mission to rescue the sister of a reporter from a Mexican cartel. It looks alright; plenty of explosions, booby traps, and violence, so definitely a Rambo film.

Rambo: Last Blood — In theaters September 20, 2019.

Terminator: Dark Fate – Official Teaser Trailer

Friday, May 24th, 2019

Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger reprise their roles as Sarah Connor and the T-800, respectively, in a movie directed by Tim Miller of Deadpool fame, with a teaser synopsis which deliberately states the film takes place after Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Seems to be equal parts nostalgic pandering, and an overt attempt to try to discredit any other sequels or spin-offs of the Terminator franchise. All the same, it’s got guns, explosions, and a liquid-metal Terminator, so all the pieces are there. Hopefully it’s decent.

Kinda cool to see a Fostech Origin, though. I had to repeat that part a few times to confirm, but the skeletonized drum mag is a dead giveaway.

Terminator: Dark Fate is slated for a theatrical release November 1st, 2019.

Apocalypse Now – Final Cut Trailer

Wednesday, May 8th, 2019

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Francis Ford Coppola Vietnam War Epic Apocalypse Now, there will be a limited release of a ‘Final Cut’ of the film, in select theaters on August 15th. This Final Cut is restored from the original film negatives to 4K quality, with 5.1 Dolby surround sound, and the film has been reedited by Coppola with a runtime that is 20 minutes shorter than the Redux version. If you’re more of a home viewer type, a 4K Ultra HD release will also be made available on August 27th.

Orc Wars – Official Trailer

Thursday, May 2nd, 2019

Orc Wars is a trailer for a fantastically schlocky premise where a lone protagonist takes on a horde of fantasy-style orcs with modern firearms. The CGI is noticeably Sci-Fi Channel (I’m not calling it SyFy) bad, but the costumes for the orcs are actually pretty great, and it looks like an overall fun film.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum – Trailer 2

Thursday, March 21st, 2019

So this new trailer for the upcoming John Wick 3 dropped today. Clearly, the series is becoming steadily more outlandish with every installment, but of course it’s still worth watching, because you definitely want to see how John fights off the combined efforts of a city full of assassins and a shadowy criminal organization.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum premiers in theaters May 17, 2019.

Doom: Annihilation Trailer

Wednesday, March 13th, 2019

There was a film based on the popular video game franchise ‘Doom’ that was released in 2005; it starred Karl Urban and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, featured monsters which were the result of genetic experimentation rather than demons from Hell, and aside from a pretty cool first person sequence, was largely forgettable, and didn’t really do its namesake justice.

Somehow, this more recent attempt to bring Doom to the big small screen looks even worse – as you can probably guess by the quality of the footage, the effects, and the acting, it’s a straight-to-home-release production. Plus, there’s not even a Doomguy / Doom Slayer, just a bunch of generic space marines; y’know, the guys that got slaughtered by the forces of Hell before Doomguy tore through them with superhuman ability, and enough firepower to start a small war.

Tellingly, the official DOOM twitter account even released a tweet stating: “We’re not involved with the movie.” Whether you take the statement as a passive-aggressive dig against the quality of the trailer, or a pure statement of fact with no double meaning, it’s clear after the excellent DOOM 2016 and what’s been shown of DOOM: Eternal, that no one on those teams had any input in this film’s production.

No definite release date has been announced, but expect Doom: Annihilation to hit various video on demand services later this year.

Mondo Tees – Predator Tiki Mug

Wednesday, March 6th, 2019

The Predator on a tiki mug? Yep, everyone’s favorite alien trophy hunter, now in tiki mug form. And, on the opposite side, you get Dutch Schaefer’s picturesque mug.

Holds 40 oz of liquid, and comes in multiple colors. Seen above is the Val Verde variant, although 3 other variants (Standard, Mud Camo, and Jungle Came Alive) are also available.

Hellboy – Red Band Trailer

Saturday, March 2nd, 2019

After a pretty unimpressive first trailer that set a pretty weird tone for the film, Lionsgate released a new red band trailer for the upcoming Hellboy reboot that makes it look quite more appealing; although I didn’t really dig the orchestral cover of ‘Smoke on the Water’. Anyway, David Harbour (of Stranger Things fame) plays the titular Hellboy, and his efforts under the employ of the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense to stop The Blood Queen (Milla Jovovich) from destroying the world.

Hellboy premiers in theaters April 12, 2019.

Ahoy – MP40

Friday, February 15th, 2019

Ahoy is back once again with another video, this time detailing the iconic German MP40 and its inclusion in video games and films. The video starts with a brief overview of the adoption of submachine guns in 20th century warfare leading up to the development of the MP40, and also briefly recognizes some of the contemporaries of its era, including the American Thompson and Soviet PPSH-41. It’s by no means an in-depth history, but it’s still an entertaining video that shows the pedigree of the titular submachine gun, and its influence on culture and entertainment.

MetaBallStudios – Star Wars Size Comparison

Monday, February 4th, 2019

YouTube channel MetaBallStudios produced this video, which compares the sizes of various objects and beings within the Star Wars universe, from the lowliest lightsaber, to the grandiose Starkiller Base AKA the creatively bankrupt super-ultra-mega Death Star, and even planetary bodies beyond, up to Yavin Prime. Truthfully, the scale of ships and planets within Star Wars wasn’t ever really a personal interest, but it’s definitely interesting to see how vast some of the vehicles get, especially when they start dwarfing modern day cities in scope.

You can check out more of MetaBallStudios’ videos and content via their YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/channel/UCQwFuQLnLocj5F7ZcmcuWYQ

Mondo – ‘They Live’ Original Motion Picture Soundtrack LP

Wednesday, January 30th, 2019

Now on sale from Mondo via their Death Waltz label is the original motion picture soundtrack from the John Carpenter classic ‘They Live’. Composed by John Carpenter and Alan Howarth, the score has Carpenter’s trademark synth sound, with some noticeably western-inspired undertones, and is one of his best. The album is available in two designs: ‘Formaldehyde Face’, which is a Reverse Purple and Blue Splatter clearly inspired by the aliens’ bizarre appearance, and the black and white swirl design titled ‘Annihilation of Consciousness’.

Now available direct from Mondo: mondotees.com/products/they-live-original-motion-picture-soundtrack-lp

Polar – Official Trailer

Tuesday, January 8th, 2019

Polar is an upcoming Netflix-exclusive film based on a web comic that was later adapted into a graphic novel. It stars Mads Mikkelsen as a highly-skilled and respected/feared assassin who has retired but finds himself back in action and at odds with his old employer and various other assassins now gunning for him…

Look, I know what you’re thinking, but no, it’s not a John Wick copycat. I mean, sure, there’s a third Wick film due out this May, so the timing of the release is certainty (at least partially) deliberate. All the same, from what I know of the original comic, the source material stands on its own, and from the trailer the film looks a bit more overtly cartoonish as opposed to John Wick, which is still somewhat cartoonish, but in a more subdued manner.

Polar launches on Netflix January 25th, 2019.

My Southern Tactical – ‘Bounty Hunter’ PMAG

Saturday, December 15th, 2018

Website ‘My Southern Tactical’ sells a wide variety of PMAGs with custom printing, for those who like their magazines to have a bit of flair. The ‘Bounty Hunter’ model seen above is, of course, modeled after the Mythosaur skull sigil made popular by its apperance on Boba Fett’s Mandalorian armor. It’s even further detailed with the appropriate green and yellow color accents.
