5.11 Tactical Unveils Limited-Edition, Custom-Designed Strider Knife

February 14th, 2014

Companies Collaborate to Release 511 U.S. Manufactured Strider/5.11 Strider Military Folder Knife

image003

MODESTO, Calif. (Feb. 13, 2014) — 5.11 Tactical®, the global innovator of tactical gear, today announced that the company has partnered with leading knife manufacturer, Strider™ Knives, to release the Strider/5.11 Strider Military Folder (SMF), a custom-designed tactical knife. Made in the U.S., the knife, which is manufactured with CTS-B75P steel for ultimate corrosion and wear resistance, brings together two companies with a common ethos—to make high-quality, functional products based on feedback from those who work in the field. As a limited-edition product, there will only be 511 knives made. Each piece, available at www.511tactical.com later this month, will include a custom nylon case, a “Raider” patch inspired by the WWII Marine Raiders’ patch and a certificate of authenticity signed by Tom Davin, 5.11 Tactical Chief Executive Officer, and Strider Knives Co-owner, Duane Dwyer.

“From the product’s design, to its durability and U.S. manufacturing, the Strider/5.11 SMF knife reflects the core values, mission and ethos of both 5.11 Tactical and Strider Knives,” said Davin. “We’ve long admired the work of Duane Dwyer and the whole Strider Knives team. Collaborating with the Strider experts to create a knife that fits the needs of our combined customer base has been a unique, yet organic, partnership resulting in a beautiful, limited-edition product.”

image001

With a sleek design, rooted in simplicity, the Strider/5.11 SMF knife is engineered with minimum components while staying true to the key components Strider Knives have become known for, including a titanium slab frame lock, a glass epoxy laminate handle and a rough peel surface for positive grip. The blade design is a drop point, hand flat ground with a simple break on the spine and no false edge.

“The Strider/5.11 SMF knife is truly a work of craftsmanship,” said Dwyer. “By engineering with utilitarian requirements in mind, we’ve created a knife that is both a workhorse and a battlefield companion—regardless of where your battle takes place. The subtle yet impactful features are demonstrative of the commitment to quality both companies were founded on and remain committed to.”

The Strider/5.11 SMF knife boasts one-of-a-kind features including a custom-made pivot pin, custom fasteners and a Titanium handle with G10 scales. For durability and long-lasting performance, this is the first Strider knife to incorporate CTS-B75P steel—an alloy from Carpenter Technologies that that is highly resistant to corrosion and wear—allowing users to more easily maintain a sharp edge for an extended period of time.

The Strider/5.11 SMF knife can be purchased on 511tactical.com later this month and will retail for $599.99.

Osprey Range Day – Introduction And Overview

February 13th, 2014

We were recently lucky enough to be invited to a range day sponsored by Osprey Armament – in association with Defense Logistics Support and PWT3 Development. This “Overmatch Concepts” Range Day was held at the Osprey Range located in Council, North Carolina. Our host for the day’s events was Retired US Army Major General David Grange, head of Osprey Global Solutions and a legend in the Ranger community.

The event kicked off with the usual admin brief for range safety and MEDEVAC plans along with the facility layout. Then, General Grange jumped right into a brief overview of the day’s events, which included an operational vignette, weapons demonstrations, and round robin group visits of products and services from partners of Osprey Global Solutions.

As it turns out, the day was set to be filled with a wide variety of technologies ranging from low to high tech. In addition to weapons there were ISR capabilities including trackers and forensic evidence collection as well as medical, and training demos. While some of it might seem old-hat, the attendees included military, LE, first responders and industry. Everyone saw something new.

The Operational Vignette was a scenario involving a raid on a terrorist bomb making element that has infiltrated the area of the Cape Fear river, represented by the buildings down range. A tracking team confirmed the location of the bomb making element, and passed the information along to an assault team who took down the building. Afterwards, an EOD team disarmed the explosives while a rescue team stood by to provide rescue and medical services as needed. It was constrained by both time and the limits of the facility but included examples of a wide variety of the “Overmatch Concepts” that were the point of the entire day.

One thing I noticed was a lot of work on battlefield obscurants. Long a bailiwick of the military engineer community, it was refreshing to see a renewed effort on their application for some more non traditional roles. MSI Delivery Systems was on hand, supplying obscurants via their AB2K Multi-Mission Aerosol Delivery System. The standalone version of the AB2K-MMADS is capable of dispensing up to 50,000 cubic feet of smoke coverage per load. A dependent version with a high capacity backpack can dispense over 320,000 cubic feet of smoke coverage. Additionally, the AB2K-MMADS can easily be configured to dispense smoke mixed with irritants for crowd control, or specialized chemicals for uses such as decontamination and infestation control.

There was also a team on hand using a remote control plane as a UAS surrogate investigating the aerial delivery of battlefield obscurants. Although it took a few runs for the effect of the test obscurant to become noticeable, testing is ongoing, and from what we’ve seen so far the system does have promise.

DSC03282

Additionally, the obscurant used at the range was water based; an oil-based obscurant is also being tested.

Look for several more stories today which provide details of some of the weapons we encountered. We’d like to once again thank MG Grange and his team for their hospitality and for setting up a great program.

    TacticalWalls – Tactical Shelves

    Tactical Shelves

TacticalWalls’ 1242 RLS and 825 PLS are shelves that double as storage solutions for rifles and handguns, respectively. Both models function as shelves with a fold down, customizable medium density polyurethane foam lined cavity for storing firearms, which is accessed by disengaging two hidden locks with the supplied magnetic keys. The compartment lowers with the assistance of pneumatic struts, and can be outfitted with optional LED lights for better visibility.

Both shelves are designed to work with standard 2″x4″ walls, and require no interior modification to install. Each shelf is supplied with a set of shelf brackets that are installed on top of the shelf for added support, and also function as bookends.

Both models are currently available for pre-order and will start shipping later this month.
