The Three Amigos – Bushnell Bear Grylls BackTrack D-Tour

Monday, July 28th, 2014

360310_1

The BackTrack D-Tour is designed to allow the user to find their way back to a custom waypoint that can be marked with the device. Using the D-Tour, we found that it’s best to travel a steady pace to allow the device to calibrate your directions. It’s worth noting that use in an area with a strong presence of iron or other magnetic metals can cause an error in the path finding. Additionally, the D-Tour is compatible with most personal computers, and can show the course, length, speed, elevation, and temperature of the most recently logged trip.

The BackTrack also comes with a rescue mirror which includes a handy Morse code guide.

SOLKOA – SUMA Survival Container

Getting Boxed In For Survival

How a “box” becomes a serious survival gear container and survival tool

Colorado Springs, CO, June, 2014, SOLKOA Survival Systems. — maker of highly-specialized survival kits for the government and civilian survival kits presents their SUMA* survival container. www.solkoasurvival.com

Background:

SOLKOA has applied their elite military unit survival experience and created the ultimate container for individual survival. This is NOT a plain Jane aluminum box, it is much different and that is the reason for its price, which begs the questions we will answer here shortly.

“When luck doesn’t last, you need something else that does. That’s why we don’t compromise quality when building our survival tools and components. SOLKOA’s commercial products are built to the same exacting standards as those we supply to elite special operations professionals operating worldwide. When your life is on the line you need tools you can rely on, especially under the worse conditions.” –LTC Bart Combs, US Army (Ret)-President, SOLKOA, Inc.”

Why the price? The light-weight SUMA survival containers and lids are CNC machined from solid blocks of ultra-tough 6061 aircraft grade aluminum resulting in thicker walls and specialized high-strength radius corners. The design and construction makes the SUMA much stronger than cheap stamped aluminum containers. This type of manufacture obviously costs more, but then again, what is your life worth?

A Survival Fire Anyone Can Make – Amazing Fastfire Tinder Blocks And Fire Starting Survival Kits

Wednesday, April 9th, 2014

Colorado Springs, CO, April 2014 – SOLKOA Survival Systems — Producer of specialized survival kits for the military and other high-risk government agencies for years is now producing their Fastfire survival fire kit for civilian use.

The key to SOLKOA’s Fastfire Fire Starting Kit is their solid fire starting tinder. The Fastfire material when contacted by a flame or just sparks creates a sustained 1,300 degree flame in seconds. The Fastfire solid cube produces a wind resistant flame that will ignite even when floating on water. The Fastfire solid cube is ideal tinder when trying to get a camp or survival fire going in most any conditions.

Fastfire is a cubic-inch of high-energy tinder resembling a piece of plastic foam (it isn’t). The blocks are hermetically and individually sealed in heavy-duty Mylar wrap for long term storage.

Fastfire blocks can be easily cut into smaller pieces as needed for extended survival or general use. The full block will burn for 10-12 minutes. If cut into 8-pieces for extended use, each piece will produce a flame for 2-3 minutes; more than enough to ignite most kindling.

160

Fastfire is dry to the touch, easily lit, smokeless, odorless, and when extinguished is cool to the touch in seconds. Each block weighs only 2/10ths of an ounce.

The complete Fastfire Fire Starting Kit includes SOLKOA’s Faststrike, a 3-inch long ferrocerium high-energy sparking rod and a 3-inch hardened steel hacksaw blade for a total of only 1 oz. This sparking system is the more reliable than others including flint because it has no mechanical parts and works when wet. Besides acting as the striker for the sparking rod, the hacksaw can be used for cutting of course and also produces excellent sawdust for use as additional tinder for a survival fire.

Complete fire starting kits come in two sizes:

· Emergency Fire Starting Kit with 2 Fast fire cubes and a Faststrike,- $16.95 MSRP

· Fire Starting Kit with 4 Fastfire cubes – $19.95MSRP

Fastfire packaged cubes can be purchased separately:

· Four for $7.95 MSRP

· Eight for $10.45 MSRP.

Bulk purchases of individual sealed Fastfire cubes are also available on request.

SOLKOA Survival Systems – New Brand Name Clears Up Market Confusion

Monday, December 30th, 2013

Colorado Springs, CO, January 2014 – SOLKOA, Inc. www.solkoa.com recognized their civilian brand Fastfire did not effectively communicate their many non-fire survival products so they have initiated SOLKOA Survival Systems www.solkoasurvival.com for their new consumer survival products line.

With more than 200 years of combined instructor experience among its professional staff, SOLKOA, Inc has been quietly producing a wide variety of highly-specialized emergency survival capabilities along with its expert instruction for the U.S. military and other high-risk organizations since 2005. Please stop by at SHOT Show booth 32513.

SOLKOA’s specialized military survival gear usually contains sensitive items that will never be available to the civilian market, but SOLKOA’s Fastfire brand created some market confusion making it difficult for SOLKOA to clearly promote their expanding civilian product line.

The SHOT show directory lists their overall corporate name SOLKOA, Inc. and they will be in booth 32513in the law enforcement and military areas; you should drop by and visit with them, they are the real deal!

So from now on the civilian products line will be SOLKOA Survival Systems.

Gerber Gear Round Up – Bear Grylls Scout Essentials Kit

Sunday, October 13th, 2013

Gerber gear offers a selection of knives, flashlights, belts, and other survival tools for the outdoorsman. We purchased a small variety of Gerber survival tools, and put them to the test with our own weekend warriors, our three Boy Scouts. The rules were simple. They could select any of the products that wanted but had to write about their impressions.

Each week, we’ll feature a new Gerber product review written by one of the Scouts.

BGScoutEssentials

The Bear Grylls Scout Essentials Kit is a polypropylene case that doubles as a water capturing device, filled with these survival essential items:

  • Waterproof Matches
  • Compact Scout Knife
  • First Aid Kit
  • LED Micro Torch Light
  • Button Compass
  • The kit also contains a Priorities of Survival Guide.

I like this kit because everything in it is useful when outdoors. The basic first aid kit would be good for treating minor injuries, and having a knife and light with you is always useful. The matches and compass would also serve well in a survival situation. I also like how the case also has use as a water catcher.

    BG Fire Starter

The Bear Grylls Fire Starter is compact and features a ferrocerium rod and metal striker. The laynard has an integrated emergency whistle. It comes with a waterproof storage compartment for tinder. Also included are land to air rescue and SOS instructions printed onto the tool for quick reference.

I like the fire starter because it’s compact and has a lanyard so I can keep it around my wrist or tie it to my gear for quick access. The waterproof compartment is useful for keeping tinder around, and the whole fire starter seals together tight. The whistle is nice for emergency situations, as are the quick reference survival instructions.

    Bear Grylls Survival Bracelet

The Bear Grylls Survival Bracelet features 12 feet of paracord for survival situations. Designed as one-size-fits-most, it has a one-hand size adjustment. It also has an emergency whistle.

This survival bracelet is nice because it has 12 feet of paracord you can unwind in emergency situations. Both the bright orange color of some of the cord and the emergency whistle could be useful in case a rescue is needed. I also like how you can adjust the bracelet to fit most people. One nice feature is an elastic band on the bracelet that holds the whistle when you don’t need it.

    Survival Lanyard

The Bear Grylls Survival Lanyard has six feet of paracord and an emergency whistle. It easily attaches to packs, keychains, etc.

I like how you can attach it to your gear to take it with you on trips. Having paracord is good because it is a very useful survival tool. I also like the emergency whistle and the orange color, because both make this lanyard a bit helpful for rescue purposes. I don’t like how it only has six feet of paracord.

    Bear Grylls Compact Compass

The Bear Grylls Compact Compass is a small survival compass. It has a convenient zipper pull lanyard that allows for attachment to a jacket zipper or key chain. The body is made from a durable plastic.

I think the Compact Compass is great. It is light, durable, and convenient. I kept it attached to my jacket zipper so I could find my proper heading any time I needed. One thing I don’t like about it is you can’t use it in the dark very well because the compass face doesn’t glow.

    Intense Torch Flashlight

The Bear Grylls Intense Torch Flashlight has a durable anodized aluminum body with rubber overmold for comfort and easy grip in any condition. The tri-sided design wont’ let it roll on flat surfaces. It’s waterproof up to 1 meter for a period of 30 minutes. The weight of the flashlight with batteries installed is 5 oz. Shines up to 89 meters. The output and run time is as follows:

    High – 140 lumens/1hr 30min
    Medium – 35 lumens/8hr 35min
    Low – 15 lumens/17hr

It also has a built-in SOS message beam that flashes SOS code at 140 lumens.

I like the Intense Torch flashlight because it’s great for my camping trips as well as around the house. The bright orange makes it easier to find and the run time is great. I do not like the low setting, however because I found the beam too weak when I used it at that setting. Everything else is awesome overall.

The Bear Grylls Survival Belt has a secret compartment on the belt buckle that you twist counter-clockwise revealing the following tools:

    -Snare Wire
    -Fishing Line
    -Fishing Hook
    -Snap Swivels
    -Weights
    -Signaling Mirror

The back of the belt buckle reveals a mini screwdriver with flathead and Philips tips. Also on the interior of the belt is a zippered compartment.

I like almost everything about this belt. I love the fishing line, fishing hook, snare wire, snap swivels, weights, and how the signaling mirror is located on the back of the cap. Also, it’s easy to tighten and loosen. What I dislike about it is the mini screwdriver is really hard to get out and the zipper pocket being on the inside instead of the outside. Overall, the belt is worth having in survival scenarios.

    Lifesaver Jerrycans

    Thursday, July 25th, 2013

    jerrycan10000_lrg

The Lifesaver Jerrycan is capable of holding up to 18.5 liters of water at a time, and can produce up to 10,000 liters of water through the life of the device. The Jerrycan uses an activated carbon filter that reduces a broad spectrum of chemical residues and contaminates; a single filter lasts for 500 liters. Lifesaver’s own FAILSAFE technology deliberately increases the number of pumps required to induce water flow as the device reaches the end of its filtration capacity, and makes it impossible to flow water when the cartridge needs replacing. The Jerrycan also features a flow rate of 3 liters per minute and can be used with an optional shower attachment which plugs on and off in seconds. A 20,000 liter variant is also available.
