The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) was served a lawsuit last week by SIG Sauer. This suit immediately followed ATF’s public chastising from a judge in a similar case brought by Innovative Arms (both cases where muzzle brakes were submitted for testing and classification and deemed “silencers” by the ATF, but no decibel reduction testing was provided to back up their determinations). It might be of interest to other muzzle device manufacturers (and possibly the legal team at SIG Sauer) that ATF themselves this month has admitted that their own sound testing equipment “…has reached end of life and requires an upgrade.” and has issued a sole-source solicitation to purchase a new “computer controlled firearm silencer testing system” from a Virginia-based Bruel & Kjaer representative that custom built ATF’s last system in 2005.
Recently, ATF’s Firearms Technology Branch claimed that Innovator Enterprises, Inc.’s Stabilizer Brake was a highly-restricted silencer, even though the manufacturer’s intent was to make a freely-sold, unregulated recoil device. The ATF’s determination, however, was shot down with no small amount of candor by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia when Innovator Enterprises sued the ATF over the mischaracterization. District Judge John Bates’ commentary read that the ATF’s “decision to classify the Stabilizer Brake as a ‘firearm silencer’ is ‘arbitrary and capricious’ for at least two reasons: the agency failed to ‘articulate a satisfactory explanation’ for its decision and the agency failed to ‘examine the relevant data’ before coming to a final conclusion.”
The Court noted that the ATF did not provide any proof or determination of the Stabilizer brake’s ability to reduce noise, but gave FTB the benefit of the doubt by assuming “Although the FTB (Firearms Technology Branch) utilizes state-of-the-art sound metering equipment, these tests do not affect the classification of any item.” But ATF themselves, in what may wind up being an unfortunately-timed admission from them in any upcoming court cases, gives justification of their purchase by admitting that their sound metering equipment is actually not “state-of-the-art” but rather “has reached end of life.”
The Court goes even further to question the history of “what exactly Congress was concerned about in deciding to regulate silencers at the federal level”, and points out a study showing that “The 1934 congressional debates [over what became the National Firearms Act] provide no explanation about why silencers were licensed” in the first place.
The ATF’s National Firearms Act Branch is incredibly overworked and understaffed. It is constantly inundated with tens of thousands of silencer transfers, and is currently dealing with the frustrations of a contractor’s failed e-Forms website (that was supposed to help ease their workload and speed the processing times of these transfers). Add the issue of being repeatedly sued over arbitrary determinations – on what is not even a firearm to begin with, but rather a harmless noise-pollution reduction device – it is certainly a ripe time for Congress to assess if suppressors should be removed from the purview of the NFA entirely.

The Kestrel® 4400 provides waterless WBGT measurement and displays on-screen warnings when environmental conditions put athletes at risk.
Boothwyn, PA – April 16, 2014 — Long distance runners have a lot to be concerned about when exercising in hot environments. Environmental factors like temperature, humidity, wind speed, solar radiation and indirect radiation from surfaces play a significant role in an athlete experiencing exertional heat stress or other medical problems. This can be particularly true when an early season event is affected by unusually high temperatures and runners have not had an opportunity to become acclimatized.
The 2012 Boston Marathon experienced an unusually hot day, resulting in the Boston Athletic Association (BAA) allowing runners to choose to defer their entries or to run at a slower pace. This situation resulted in the BAA evaluating the best way to monitor heat stress conditions during their premier endurance event. To do so, the BAA partnered with the Natick, MA based US Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM) to evaluate available methods for monitoring heat conditions and providing guidance for athletes and emergency personnel. One of the tools the USARIEM team will be deploying for their monitoring program at this year’s race is the Kestrel 4400 Heat Stress Tracker.
The Kestrel 4400 Heat Stress Tracker is a handheld or tripod-mountable portable instrument that provides waterless readings of Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT), the most widely- used measure of physiological heat stress in an environment. After first validating the accuracy of the Kestrel 4400 Heat Stress Tracker in the USARIEM environmental chambers, the USARIEM team will be taking measurements at three locations throughout race day and comparing these “ground truth” readings with alternative methods for calculating WBGT. Based on their study, USARIEM hopes to be able to provide the BAA and other endurance event organizers with recommendations on the best way to monitor heat stress conditions at events.
The Kestrel 4400 helps athletic trainers, military trainers, emergency staff and scientists get real-time information to monitor environmental conditions such as heat index, relative humidity, temperature and most importantly WBGT. WBGT is an aggregate environmental measurement that combines ambient temperature, humidity, sunlight, radiant heat and wind into a single number that can be referenced to published guidelines to increase safety and preparedness for hot weather activities. The American College of Sports Medicine provides the following WBGT guidance for endurance events: when WBGT exceeds 65°F, warn entrants of increased heat illness potential; if WBGT is over 73°F, recommend entrants adjust their normal pace or withdraw if at risk; if WBGT exceeds 82°F, cancel event or recommend voluntary withdrawal. The Kestrel 4400 has user-settable warning zones that can be set up to trigger when WBGT passes these thresholds, helping to ensure that event personnel are aware and prepared when the chance of exertional heat stress and adverse medical events rises.
The Kestrel 4400 is also a full environmental weather meter, offering readings of all meteorological measurements and can be Bluetooth® enabled. Sealed to IP-67 standards and drop tested to MIL-STD-810G, the Kestrel 4400 is built to stand up to real-world conditions.

LAS VEGAS, NV — Arsenal, Inc. is proud to announce the expansion of its SAM7 Family products. The SAM7UF rifle is the latest in the growing group of firearms to join the modern SAM family and incorporates the latest technologies, quality, and workmanship the American market has come to expect from Arsenal and SAM7 series.
The SAM7UF is a 7.62x39mm semi-automatic rifle, manufactured on Arsenal’s legendary hot-die forged and milled receiver and incorporates the modern under-folding buttstock. Loyal to its traditions, Arsenal has manufactured the SAM7UF rifle with all mil-spec and premium components, including the hard chrome lined hammer forged barrel, reinforced polymer pistol grip and hand guards, stainless steel heat shield, the 90-degree vertical gas block with bayonet/accessories lug, and the original 14x1mm left-hand muzzle threads.
The SAM7UF utilizes the modern straight-back under-folding stock, which locks perpendicular to the action and the bore of the rifle. In order to provide a more secure and firm lock, whether in a folded or extended position, this stock locks on both sides of the receiver with 4 solid pins. This, with the additional reinforcement in the arms of the stock, stabilizes the rifle, which significantly reduces the climb, and gives the shooter much firmer control over the firearm for improved accuracy and effectiveness.
If the rifle looks familiar, it made a brief appearance as the SAS M-7 when Arsenal, Inc. released it as a limited run. Two years ago, Arsenal began serious work on a refined version that integrated maximum precision and new manufacturing processes. What cost just over $2,000 a few years ago will retail with the introductory price of:
MSRP: $1299.00
On top of this already amazing introductory price, the first batch of rifles will include a $50 coupon toward purchase of Arsenal accessories from K-Var Corp.
Colorado Springs, CO, April 2014 – SOLKOA Survival Systems — Producer of specialized survival kits for the military and other high-risk government agencies for years is now producing their Fastfire survival fire kit for civilian use.
The key to SOLKOA’s Fastfire Fire Starting Kit is their solid fire starting tinder. The Fastfire material when contacted by a flame or just sparks creates a sustained 1,300 degree flame in seconds. The Fastfire solid cube produces a wind resistant flame that will ignite even when floating on water. The Fastfire solid cube is ideal tinder when trying to get a camp or survival fire going in most any conditions.
Fastfire is a cubic-inch of high-energy tinder resembling a piece of plastic foam (it isn’t). The blocks are hermetically and individually sealed in heavy-duty Mylar wrap for long term storage.
Fastfire blocks can be easily cut into smaller pieces as needed for extended survival or general use. The full block will burn for 10-12 minutes. If cut into 8-pieces for extended use, each piece will produce a flame for 2-3 minutes; more than enough to ignite most kindling.
Fastfire is dry to the touch, easily lit, smokeless, odorless, and when extinguished is cool to the touch in seconds. Each block weighs only 2/10ths of an ounce.
The complete Fastfire Fire Starting Kit includes SOLKOA’s Faststrike, a 3-inch long ferrocerium high-energy sparking rod and a 3-inch hardened steel hacksaw blade for a total of only 1 oz. This sparking system is the more reliable than others including flint because it has no mechanical parts and works when wet. Besides acting as the striker for the sparking rod, the hacksaw can be used for cutting of course and also produces excellent sawdust for use as additional tinder for a survival fire.
Complete fire starting kits come in two sizes:
· Emergency Fire Starting Kit with 2 Fast fire cubes and a Faststrike,- $16.95 MSRP
· Fire Starting Kit with 4 Fastfire cubes – $19.95MSRP
Fastfire packaged cubes can be purchased separately:
· Four for $7.95 MSRP
· Eight for $10.45 MSRP.
Bulk purchases of individual sealed Fastfire cubes are also available on request.
Snake Plissken’s ESCAPE – Video game pre-production milestone video from Neurobellum on Vimeo.
This footage is (thankfully) all that remains of ‘Snake Plissken’s Escape’, a video game that was to be published by Namco and released back in 2005. Developed by the remaining ‘Dead to Rights 2’ staff, the game would have featured a storyline approved by Carpenter, Russell, and Hill and a full body scan of Russell for the titular character. The developer’s influence is obvious when compared to their previous work, ‘Dead to Rights 2’: acrobatic gunplay with dual wielding and slow motion, which frankly seems a bit beyond Snake’s demonstrated capabilities.
Ace gunner incorporates Tannerite® Exploding Targets into Virtual Vision system
Pleasant Hill, OR (April 4, 2014) – Target secured. Gun raised. A deafening silence envelops the range. The shooter touches one off, narrowly missing the mark. A catcaller barks, “What are you blind or something?” If the shooter were Jim Miekka, his answer would be “why yes, I am.” But if the gunner truly was Miekka, well, it’s likely the target would have been obliterated and broadcast with a percussion that is distinctively Tannerite®. Miekka doesn’t miss all that often.
Miekka, known at his local Hermosa, Florida gun club as “The Midnight Gunslinger,” lost his sight at the youthful age of 26. The accident that claimed Miekka’s vision damaged a hand as well, but the accredited marksman points out emphatically that the injury hasn’t hampered his gun handling skills. In fact, besides being adroit at long-range target shooting, Miekka more than holds his own as a quick-draw gunslinger, knocking down cowboy targets like Wyatt Earp.
On the range, Miekka is able to hit four out of five targets at 100 yards. Think about that. Four out of five targets at a 100 yards, without ever seeing them… To administer that level of accuracy, Miekka, the inventor, combines his uncanny shooting skills with homespun technology.
Miekka invented “Virtual Vision,” a system that utilizes sound waves to help blind shooters “see” an 8-inch target at 100 yards. At the core is a scope with a 75-times magnifier of his own creation. Headphones in place, Miekka homes in on pings that ultimately lead him to the bulls-eye. The technology isn’t simple, but roundabout terms, essentially uses an artificial imaging device and photo cells to convert electricity into sound, giving whole new meaning to sighting-in a rifle.
Because of Miekka’s brainchild, rifle shooting has become a growing recreation for people without sight. Adding Tannerite® Exploding Targets to the equation has further bolstered that popularity. The resulting explosion lets shooters know instantly if they’ve hit their mark.
Miekka isn’t known only for his firearms mastery or invention of Virtual Vision, either. On an even larger scale, the mathematician and former physics teacher developed “The Hindenburg Omen”, a New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) indicator that predicts market crashes before they happen.
Suffice to say Miekka is a problem solver. And Tannerite® is proud to be part of one particular solution.

After shutting down last year, Contour is back and under new management. They relaunched their official website, and are once again offering the classic Contour+2 and waterproof Roam2 cameras. In the coming months, they plan to launch new cameras that will feature the traditional Contour design features: slide-to-record switch, laser alignment system, and 270° rotating lens.
Contour cameras were popular do to their simplicity, ruggedness, and wide accessory support, so it’s great to see their return to the market.

In case you missed the April Fool’s Day announcement, 5.11 Tactical is in fact bringing back the TDK – Tactical Duty Kilt. Originally started as their 2013 April Fool’s Day prank, demand for the TDK led 5.11 to actually release the product, albeit for a limited time only. Now, they’re releasing it again (for a limited time only, again) starting April 15th. Additionally, $10 from the sale of every TDK will go towards supporting We Salute You Veterans and the FIBNAA.
If you haven’t seen ‘DREDD’ yet, it’s a damn fine movie adaption of Judge Dredd (it’s on Netflix) and I highly recommend it. Karl Urban, who played the title character, made this video to remind the fans that they’re hard at work at getting a sequel made, and there’s a petition working towards that goal.

Sounds like a helluva great .22 suppressor. Too bad the waiting period for a 200 Sliver Sheckel tax stamp has gone up to over a year ever since the Bureau of Destructive Magical Devices has replaced their original Owl-based filing system with one staffed entirely by magical shell-less turtles; you know some hippy-ass druid in high office is getting a nice kickback for that bit of “infrastructure improvement”…

The Raid 2: Berandal (Deleted Scene: Gang War) from Merantau Films on Vimeo.
This is one of the few deleted scenes from ‘The Raid 2: Berandal’. It took 6 days of shooting and a lot of money to produce, but ultimately was found to interfere with the pacing of the movie and was cut as a result. It’s also hyper violent, so it’s potentially NSFW.
