I was at REI today and I saw a recall notice for the Gerber Gear Bear Grylls Parang. It seems that there’s a weakness in the area where the blade meets the handle. This can cause either the blade or the handle to break during use which poses a laceration hazard. If you happened to have purchase one of these blades, you can register at this page, where Gerber will process your info, send out a prepaid FedEx box, and send you a replacement parang some weeks later. Given the quality of the blade, I’d rather receive a refund, but you get what you get, I suppose.

Black Ops 2 – Zombies Reveal Trailer
Wednesday, September 26th, 2012The reveal trailer for zombies mode in the upcoming CoD: Black Ops 2 just came out today. Personally, I would have waited to release this until Halloween rolled around, but then again I’m also not a member of the marketing team for a billion dollar game franchise.

WETA Workshop Portal Turret Replica
Monday, September 24th, 2012I didn’t think WETA could top their previous gift to the fine folks at Valve, a replica of the engineer’s turret from Team Fortress 2. Then, they sent a replica of the turret from Portal, and I was proven wrong. Features motion tracking, deployable guns, and in-game sound effects and voice clips.
Recon Cigars
Sunday, September 23rd, 2012I was at a local gun show today and happened to see a company called Recon Cigars with a booth on display. Their product is named “The Triumphant Recon Cigar”. Each Recon is handrolled by expert “Torcedores” (cigar rollers) using high-quality leaves from regions with rich and fertile soils that produce rare and unique tobacco for filler, and “ECU” wrapper leaf grown in Quevedo and Babahoyo, Ecuador. The cigars are further adorned with hand cut and hand placed patches of Candela, South American Cameroon, and Criollo-Maduro wrapper that gives them a woodland-esque camouflage look. Additionally, a percentage of each purchase goes towards the charitable organization Hope For The Warriors.

M48 Apocalypse Series Tactical Tomahawk
Saturday, September 22nd, 2012While it has a bright green ‘zombie’ handle, the M48 Apocalypse Series Tomahawk does have some good features going for it. The 8″ head, constructed from 2Cr13 stainless steel, has two sharpened blades, the axe and spike. The 30% nylon reinforced handle secures the head with three separate bolts and is wrapped in black paracord. The M48 also comes with a nylon belt sheath with belt loop and snap closure buttons. It’s a United Cutlery piece, and they do offer a ‘non-zombified’ all-black version as well, if the Apocalypse model isn’t your thing.
Available on Amazon.com.

Herschel Anchor Computer Sleeve – Chocolate Chip Camo
Thursday, September 20th, 2012Herschel Supply Co.’s Anchor Computer Sleeve is fully padded with a fleece-lined interior. It’s designed to fit 11″, 13″, and 15″ computers. The camo pattern seems to be based heavily on the DBDU or Chocolate-Chip camo pattern used during the Gulf War by the US military; Herschel even marks it as ‘Desert Storm’ on their product line. Herschel also offers a small line of luggage that uses the same pattern, including these parcel and claim bags.

Roach Biobots
Monday, September 17th, 2012Researchers at North Carolina State University have managed to turn Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches into biobots, which can be issued movement commands wirelessly. The process involved taking an off-the-shelf microcontroller and hooking it up to the roaches’ antennae and abdomen. Using this, they were able to issue the roach commands that fooled it into thinking either danger was near or that an obstacle was blocking its path, which is how the roach follows the set path seen in the video. It wouldn’t be surprising to see spy equipment in the near future developed using this technology, along with any number of uses people can come up with.

Target Joffrey Poster
Saturday, September 15th, 2012Anyone who is familiar with ‘Game of Thrones’, or the book series it’s based on, knows that Joffrey Baratheon is a major jerkass, and that’s putting it lightly. Thanks to 604 Republic, however anyone can take out their frustration on a shooting target bearing his image. These full color 12.5″ by 18.5″ targets are printed on 100lb. stock paper using environmentally friendly vegetable soy based inks. My favorite element is the ‘Made In Winterfell’ tag on the lower-right corner of the target.
Experimental Bullpup Rifles
Friday, September 14th, 2012This is an image collection of experimental bullpup prototype rifles seemingly based on the AK design or at least chambered for the same 7.62×39 cartridge. At least one of the rifles, the TKB-022, actually existed. It was designed by G.A. Korobov of Tula Design Bureau, itself an arms-designing organization associated with Tula Arms Factory, and never went into full production due to its radical design; Soviet officers preferred the familiarity and reliability of the already proven AK-47 and its variants. Interestingly enough, the TKB-022 has the best barrel length to overall length ratio of most military rifles ever built, and at one point was chambered for an experimental 5.6×39 cartridge that later evolved into the current 5.45×39.

ADAPPT XT
Wednesday, September 12th, 2012The ADAPPT XT, a multi-function iPhone 4 utility case, is an impressive-looking project currently open for funding on Indiegogo. The poly-carbonate case protects the phone from drops, nicks, and scratches and houses both a 1.5″ utility blade and a multi-tool card. The card currently functions as a 10 piece wrench set, flat head screwdriver, ruler, and bottle opener. If the project gets off the ground, both the multi-tool card and knife slot will have options of customization such as a mirror or magnifying glass, and scissors or a USB drive. Additionally, there are plans to release a case for the recently announced iPhone 5.

America’s Fighting Dinosaur On Kickstarter
Sunday, September 9th, 2012‘America’s Fighting Dinosaur’ is a short film currently looking for funding on Kickstarter. It’s a faux documentary on the exploits of “Pvt. “Little” Sammy Vogel, a 7 ton, 40 foot long Army infantryman and Tyrannosaurus Rex” and his actions during WWII. The project has already easily reached past its $10,000 goal, however the creator has stated that any additional funds up to and past $20,000 will be used to extend the original run time of 10 minutes to roughly 40 minutes, along with adding additional rewards to the different donation levels, such making the soundtrack available via digital download and posters and t-shirts.

Imperial Death Star Officer’s Cap
Thursday, September 6th, 2012ThinkGeek is selling replicas of the Imperial Death Star Officer’s Cap from the ‘Star Wars’ films. They’re created from the existing cut patterns from the LucasFilms archives and made using a heavy, custom dyed, all-cotton weave, which is similar to the fabric used to make the originals. The cap also includes an aluminum Imperial disk, which functions as “the metal thing in the center of the forehead”. Great for cosplay or just wearing around, because nothing says ‘I’m awesome’ quite like an Imperial Officer’s Cap.
You can buy it here.
