Utah First State To Have An Offical State Firearm

Sunday, March 20th, 2011

Out of all the decisions politicians have made over the years, I can find one I’m totally behind: Utah Gov. Gary Herbert has signed legislation that declared the M1911 as Utah’s official state firearm, a first for any state in the US. Now that one of the most well-known and popular pistols on the planet is an officially recognized symbol of a state, who’s to say others won’t follow suit? Arizona’s on board with the Colt Single Action, after all.

Thanks to wtma.com for the original story.

AOTS Visits Blackheart International – Foreign Weaponry

Saturday, March 19th, 2011

Video GameE3 2011AOTS Exclusive

AOTS correspondent Weston Scott spends his second day at Blackheart International firing their impressive selection of foreign weaponry, including such classics as the AK-74 SU and PKM machine gun. Pretty entertaining stuff, but I’d feel irresponsible if I didn’t point out the PPSH-41 is actually a SMG, not a rifle. Not a big issue, but then again anyone who has played any of the WWII Call of Duty’s would know this by heart, and since G4 is a channel for gamers…

Also, I really want one of those Saiga-12s. Anything that can shoot a creepy looking mannequin in half is a definite must-have.

SSD After Dark – Major Fox Keeps Your Riser Up

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

Well it’s dark somewhere. Ever had trouble keep it up? Your stock’s cheek riser, that is. Recently, we published an article about Victor Company’s Accu-Stack Comb Risers. While we think we did a pretty good job of explaining what they do, Victor Company produced this commercial to show the benefits of their Accu-Stack Comb Risers and it will probably be the best thing you see, all day (or night). Despite our tagline it is safe for work.

Weapons I’d Like To See In Modern Warfare 3 A.K.A. Please Don’t Pull A Black Ops Again.

Monday, March 14th, 2011

Ever since the Call of Duty series went ‘modern’ there has been an increase in firearms that just don’t belong in the game and/or are being used by the wrong forces. It started simply with the MP44 being featured in multiplayer that takes place in 2011, along with Ultranationalists having access to MP5s (CoD4), and has spiraled into rifles like the FAMAS being used by Russian forces in both 1968 (Black Ops. lolwut?) and 2016 (MW2). While I can’t claim what other firearms Russia might integrate into their arsenal in the future, I think it’s safe to assume they won’t be using French guns. Or TAR 21s. Or Striker shotguns. Or… I’ll shut up now.

The point is it wouldn’t hurt for the devs to do a little research into what weapons specific forces would actually use, instead of replacing accuracy with the rule of cool. What follows is a list of guns I want to see in the next CoD game, provided it’s actually MW3. If it’s not, and instead ‘CoD: It’s In Space and Totally Ain’t Halo’ is the next title, I better see a Gauss Rifle, dangnabit!

MP7A1

H&K’s answer to the FN P90. A damn cool weapon, it fires the armor piercing 4.6x30mm cartridge from either a 20, 30, or 40 round magazine. It’s practically a firearm that combines all the best aspects of both a SMG and AR into one beautiful package. Ever since I used it in Medal of Honor multiplayer I always wondered how grossly overpowered it could be in CoD. Maybe we’ll see it, maybe we won’t. But I sure hope we do.

AK-74M

AK-47s and Russia go together like peanut butter and chocolate. We get it. But believe it or not, there’s more to the AK family than just the classic 7.62×39 spewing death-dealer. Now I’ll admit there was also a Middle Eastern militia in both Modern Warfare games, and they most definitely would be using AK-47s (and other variants), but the Russian forces themselves? Not likely. There’s also the AK-100 series rifles to consider, and since the games do take place in the near future, I could see them having widespread use. Anyway, it would just be more accurate to see an AK-74M in the hands of a modern Russian infantryman, and not an F2000. That’s all I’m saying.

XM-25 Grenade Launcher

25mm, airbursting, high-explosive, pre-programable grenades. This thing practically screams overpowered, doesn’t it? Already in deployment in Afghanistan, it’s seen incredible success, ending engagements almost as soon as they begin. Plus, I’m sure they could find a way to balance it in-game. After all, they’ve managed to make guns less impressive than they are in real life. I’m looking at you, AA-12.

That’s just a small sample of what I’d like to see, especially since this article’s getting a bit longer than I originally intended. But you get the general idea: keep what makes sense, dispose of the rest and replace them with something else; something period appropriate. Hell, it wouldn’t hurt to have two AK variants in the same game. Bad Company 2 did it with the AN-94 Abakan and AEK-971 Vintovka, after all. And I’d also like to hear what you want to see in the next CoD game. Or how you feel about how inaccurate the weaponry has been in the current CoD games. Game developers say they read stuff like this, after all.

Quick Draw Gun Magnet

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

If you’ve ever felt you need to be prepared for a situation like this, then you need the Quick Draw Gun Magnet. Attach this to any surface that can hold at least 10 lbs. of weight, including most walls or the underside of a desk, and you can have instant, holster free access to any number of firearms, including guns of stainless steel construction. I may just get one so I can keep an AR-15 on the side of my fridge. Late night snacking is one of the most vulnerable periods for any homeowner, after all.

Kel-Tec Shotgun Updated Overview

Monday, March 7th, 2011

The KSG (Kel-Tec Shotgun) pulled a lot of buzz during SHOT Show, due to its 14+1 shotshell capacity and [semi] unique bullpup design. It also happens to be on my personal list of must have firearms for this year. This video shows some updates done to the design since SHOT, some good, some bad. For example, fixing the trigger reset was a big win. Cutouts on the magazine tubes as an ammo indicator; good in theory, but a potentially harmful entryway for dust and debris. Still, the KSG won’t be released until later this year, so it’s entirely possible that the design can be further refined by then. Even so, I still hate waiting for the newest futuristic-looking scattergun to finally be in my hands. Where’s Doc Brown and the DeLorean when you need ’em?

Visit keltecweapons.com for more information on the KSG and other Kel-Tec firearms and products.

Make Any Glock Full-Auto

Friday, March 4th, 2011

With SIGG’s FSSG drop-in selector switch. It replaces the rear slide plate on any model Glock and allows the user to switch between full and semi-auto, up to 1200 RPM. Although the legality of making your pistol full-auto varies by location, the price one of these switches is going for on this auction is almost too good a deal to pass up. Of course it always helps to see it in action before you buy:

And when I said any model Glock, I meant it: that’s a Glock 35, which fires .40 caliber. Wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of that.

Thanks goes to The Firearms Blog.

S&W Governor

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

Billed as “The revolver of choice. Literally.”, the Smith and Wesson Governor is a six-chamber revolver that can chamber rounds in 3 different calibers. Specifically .410 shotshell, .45 Colt, and .45 ACP. The overall length is 8.5 inches with a 2.5 inch barrel and the total weight is 29.6 ounces. In addition, it feature a synthetic grip and a dovetailed Tritium forward night sight. The model shown above also includes the optional Crimson Trace laser grip, for improved target acquisition. Revolvers are reliable sidearms, and it’s a real treat to see one with such diverse chambering options. Still, it makes you wonder if shotshell capable revolvers are simply a fad, or are they here to stay?

You can pre-order at thegunsource.com.

Bolt-Action Door Lock

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

As seen on Fail Blog, in their Win category. An old-school bolt-action rifle carved around the actual bolt lock of a bathroom door. Someone claims it’s a Mosin-Nagant carbine. I agree, specifically the Mosin-Nagant Model 1944 carbine:

Sure, it’s not a perfect copy, but it’s pretty damn close. But I’m always open to being proven wrong, so if you have a better idea of what that rifle could possibly be a carving of, there’s a comment section waiting for you.

Das Doppleglock

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Available only to law enforcement and government, the Glock models 18 and 18c are 9mm pistols, almost entirely indistinguishable from the Glock model 17, except for their ability to go fully automatic. It seems this isn’t enough, for the ‘Doubleglock’ was born. A custom kit that combines two Glock 18s, probably both 18cs, with a center red dot for accuracy. Although I find personally find little use for any full auto pistols, let alone two strapped together, I must say this is pretty clever. It should also win all your battles from looks alone. No one wants to be staring at the business end of this bullet hose.

Taurus Raging Judge 28 Gauge Revolver

Sunday, February 20th, 2011

It’s a very large revolver that holds five 28 gauge shotgun shells. And when I say “very large”, think Hellboy’s Good Samaritan for a fairly decent comparison. The gun was seen as recently as SHOT Show 2011, and it’s been cleared by BATFE, so expect it out at some point in the future. From the look alone, I’d say it just might just make someone crap their pants, provided such a situation were to arise. 🙂

Drive-Thru Sex Shop Offers Credit For Guns

Friday, February 18th, 2011

Yes, that eye catching title is completely true. A drive-thru adult store in Alabama, specifically Pleasures located in Huntsville, is offering a deal where an individual can trade their firearms for adult products. Sherri Williams, the owner of the store, vows to turn in any illegal firearms to the police, while selling the legal ones and using the profit to benefit victims of gun violence. What surprises me most about this is expecting anyone from Alabama to give their guns away. Fat chance of that. However, I just can’t help but feel if any place in the world has a drive-thru adult store, it’d have to be Alabama.

Thanks to The Week for the story. You can read the full article here.

AR-15 Golf Ball Launching Attachment

Saturday, February 12th, 2011

Tired of getting out-driven on the golf course? More accurate with your rifle than with your 9-iron? Then you need one of these! Simply replace your muzzle break or flash hider with this golf ball launcher, and you’ll be making 250 yard drives easy. The best part is it only requires .223 blanks, and no gunsmithing is required! In fact, it would also make a decent non-lethal anti-hippy device, except that non-lethal and hippy are two words that should never be in the same sentence.

A Simple, Accurate Bullet Counter

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

When shooting a firearm, it’s sometimes difficult to remember exactly how many rounds are left in your magazine. And while bullet counters aren’t a new concept, what has been produced is mostly limited to military use. However, Michael Ciuffo has created a simple to use and more importantly accurate bullet counter. As you can see from the video, it attaches to the standard Picatinny rail system. It works by picking up the recoil of each shot, and can be adjusted for sensitivity, from a few to 50 Gs of force. Although the counter is pre-set at 30 rounds, it can be adjusted for more or less, dependent on the size of your magazine. The display also flashes when you’ve run dry, and one of the more useful features is if you perform a reload and a round is still in the chamber, pressing the reset button will add +1 to your original count. Finally, the power source is simple: it runs on 2 AA batteries.

This is a very cool product, and it’s definitely on my list of ‘must-haves’. Luckily, because of the large demand for the counters Michael Ciuffo is entering production with them. To receive the newsletter which will detail their eventual release, message him on Youtube with your e-mail address in the body. Also, it’s worth note that these counters are not intended for use in combat situations, but from what I understand the device is sturdy enough that it could handle such conditions.

Brink: A Choir Of Guns

Saturday, February 5th, 2011

Brink is an upcoming FPS by developer Splash Damage, that combines elements of parkour, in-depth weapon customization, and class-based gameplay. Due to the multitude of AAA titles that are being released along side it, Brink hasn’t received a large amount of publicity, but I’m already beginning to see what has the potential to be one of the greatest games of the year. It’s release date is May 17.

Civilian Class I Lasers Now Available from TNVC

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

Some very exciting news from Tactical Night Vision Company. They are now selling Class1 Infrared Lasers for Civilians. Laser Devices, Inc (LDI) has begun manufacturing Class1 (eye safe) IR lasers for commercial sale and TNVC, a distributor for LDI, is now stocking these units. Class1 lasers are 0.07mW, providing a precise weapon-mounted aiming solution out to 75-100 yards. These are the first true, IR lasers available for commercial sale and this is the first time civilians can purchase them. Standard power IR lasers (class IIIb) are restricted to government purchase by the FDA. These units are built using LDI’s legacy Milspec body housings which are precision machined aerospace grade aluminum with a Mil-Spec surface anodizing. They have been proven on the battlefield and will stand up to harsh recoil and field abuse. Class1 lasers are available in four variants:

DBLA-I² – Class1 IR laser/ Class IIIa Visible Laser (red or green)
OTAL – Class1 IR Laser
ITAL – Class1 IR Laser
EOLAD 1L – Class1 IR Laser/ Eotech 552 Holo Sight

The KSG Is Going To Be Huge

Saturday, January 22nd, 2011

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, I love Kel-Tec’s new KSG. Fortunately, despite the throngs of people clamoring for it, I finally had the chance to handle one at SHOT. To be honest, it was my pick for number one new product at SHOT Show. I mean, the thing is just cool. It’s a high-capacity bullpup shotgun that’s manufactured in the US! What’s not to love? Even with its fairly high price point ($880), I can tell it’s going to sell like gangbusters when it comes out 3rd quarter this year. Of course such high demand raises the question if I will be able to get a hold of one when it’s released, especially in that slick green polymer. I suppose only time will tell.

There Is An Underbarrel Flamethrower!

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

On my Black Ops Weapons article, I claimed that an underbarrel flamethrower never existed. However, one of our readers alerted me to a model that existed as early as WWII. Created by the Finns, it was an underbarrel mount for the M44 flamethrower which was used on the Suomi KP/-31 submachine gun. While not entirely like the underbarrel Flamethrower found in Black Ops, this proves the concept still has some basis in reality. Thanks!

Maverick HS12 “Tactical” Over/Under

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

Mossberg knows how to make a great shotgun. Their products are widely used by military, law enforcement, and civilian sources for both personal defense and sport. But when they decide to alter one of their hunting shotguns and call it a tactical firearm? That may just be jumping the shark a little. On that note, I present to you The Maverick HS12 over/under.

Now, when we get right down to it, a ‘tactical’ firearm’s purpose is to perform well when engaging an enemy, and I’m not too sure an over/under shotgun has that capability. Sure it’s black, features a shortened barrel, and sports Picatinny rails (just a reminder: I am not describing an M4 carbine) but those particular characteristics don’t instantly equal tactical. In addition to this, one glaring flaw really holds the Maverick back: it features extractors and not ejectors, so when you pop the barrel to reload, you have to manually remove the spent shells, a time-consuming action that could cost you your life.

Maybe I’m being a little too judgmental since I’ve never actually tested the Maverick, but the idea isn’t a practical one. I’d rather get a 590A1 with a six round magazine tube (from the same company, no less) than a double-barrel shotgun any day of the week. Also, when you release a firearm that sounds more like a Nerf blaster than a self-defense tool, you deserve at least a little scrutiny.

‘Downfall’ Of The ACR

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

Now over a year old, the ‘Hitler Downfall’ meme is pretty dead, and so was this vid as far as we knew. YouTube at one point had pulled all of the videos, including this one. It was used to lampoon all sorts of stuff but it’s a rare situation when the subject being parodied had to do with the tactical industry. We originally posted it around SHOT Show last year when the ACR was finally released to a market weary of a rough economy and high priced guns. On that note, behold as Hitler rages about the ACR’s high price point! Everyone was up in arms about it back then but now a year later, accepts the price as part of doing business. Hope this gets your SHOT Show juices flowing, but beware, the subtitles are NSFW.

The video is also available on Youtube in a higher quality, but isn’t availabe for embedding. You can watch it here.

Keltec KSG 14-Shot 12 Gauge Bullpup Shotgun

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

It’s pump-action, civilian legal, holds 14+1 rounds, loads and ejects from the bottom, and sports an overall length of 26.5″ with an 18″ barrel. It’ll be available sometime in 2011 but it doesn’t have an MSRP yet. I’ll post more info as I find it.
